Helpful Hints for Dooley

A practical, loving guide to Dooley’s words, routines, comfort, safety, and favorite things.

Commands he knows

• (Let's) Go Potty • Come • Sit • Stay • Place • Crate • Leave it (sometimes you have to use your authoritative voice)

Words and phrases he responds to

• “Do you want ahhhh treat?” • “Wassat?!” (Be prepared for Dooley to enter Incredible Hulk mode. He will check the window and scour the house.) • “What do you want?!” (I would sometimes say this to him over and over to wind him up before giving him a treat. He is a funny little guy)

Things he loves

• Cheese • Walks • Fetch • Sleeping under the covers • Squeaker toys • Being near his person

Things he fears

• Storms • Boxes • Sudden unfamiliar situations

Food and feeding routine

Eats once daily. 1 cup Fromm kibble with some ground beef and cheese sprinkled in.

Walk routine

I use a prong collar when walking him on the street because I don't want him to pull too hard for my comfort but also so he doesn't lunge at other dogs or get in front of a car. If you're hiking I recommend his harness because you can pick him up.

Sleep preferences

Crate trained but may prefer sleeping near his person at first. If I'm being honest he only sleeps in his crate when he's at a dog sitters. I let him sleep on top of my comforter under his own little blanket.

Play preferences

He likes to play fetch. I use a ball thrower because it's easier on the arm and the ball usually gets pretty slobbery.

Reactivity notes

Dooley is very reactive to other dogs. I would not take him to a dog park. He can get to know other dogs over time but there is an extended 'figuring it out phase'. As mentioned we have concerns, although no confirmation, that he is reactive with children as well. Particularly toddlers and particularly when toys are involved.

Safety notes

Children, dogs, visitors, toys, storms, unfamiliar situations, and any special precautions.

Comfort tips

What helps him settle: blankets, being close, gentle voices, white noise, quiet rooms.

Emergency / previous owner contact

Add vet, emergency vet, microchip, medication, and previous owner contact details.
